Song of The Day (Wednesday, October 24th, 2012)

Last year I talked a little about Wings' 1973 album Red Rose Speedway and how I felt there were only two good songs on it: Big Barn Bed (one of my Song of the Day picks in June 2011) and Single Pigeon. Over a year later, my opinion on that hasn't really changed. I still feel it incredibly weak and not indicative of Paul McCartney's amazing gift as a songwriter. With Wings, I feel like he got really lazy at times and just put a lot of half baked stuff on record.

Single Pigeon, however, is not one of those examples. A simple, piano song with a beautiful, dark melody that for some reasons always gave me the feeling of Paul singing this song looking out his window at boats at a dock. I don't know why, but this song gives me a nautical vibe.

I could do without the horn blasts near the end but by that time the song is pretty much over. It's only a short song, not reaching 2 minutes long and this is to it's advantage. I'm not saying that if it was longer, it would be boring, but sometimes songs like this work best as short snippets, staying only for so long but staying in your head much longer.

  1. Just about everything McCartney has done since leaving the Beatles is better than that I.R.A. supporting bastard Lennon did. Lennon's solo stuff was piss weak with the exception of Give Me Some Truth.
McCartney has always been the superior songwriter.
